Ecid Kills in “Breaking Up With Death”

On Monday, Minneapolis MC/producer Ecid managed to evoke the jokes from the great equalizer in his new song “Breaking Up With Death.”

After being premiered a month ago on 89.3 FM The Current‘s “Local Show with Andrea Swenson“, the Fill In The Breaks founder decided to simultaneously roll out the song’s quirky visuals as well as release the song for free download on his Bandcamp. As explained in his email newsletter, Ecid describes the heavy inspiration behind the witty track:

I wrote this song in response to a recent period in my life filled with some heavy losses. I was trying to find a light hearted way to come to terms with death being an unavoidable part of the human experience. The idea of attempting to break up with death is funny to me because it’s impossible. We can’t avoid our life long connection to it. Acceptance is our only choice.

Directed by Mercies May of Strange and Distant Pictures, Ecid doubled down on the comical concept by portraying a forlorn lover desperately clinging to the warmth of the chilling grim reaper. Following through on schemes befitting to episodes of the Looney Tunes, his character goes to whimsical lengths to resuscitate their floundering fling including crashing a funeral or two.
